#1. Hansie Cronje Fixes a Match
The former South African captain is most often referred to as one of the most tainted figures in the cricket history. In the year 2000, Hansie was caught by the Delhi police. They claimed to have substantial evidence against the cricketer along with other South African players for fixing a match. Many confessions and revelations came to light about Hansie exchanging money with other players to adjust the results. As a consequence, he was banned in the year 2001 from any kind of participation in the game in any form. He was imposed a lifetime ban. Ironically, he was killed in a plane crash the following year.
#2. Mohammad Azharuddin’s Match Fixing Scandals
Azharuddin, the former Indian captain was never untouched by the scandals. After having a clean and prestigious phase in career, the player with magical wrists was accused of match fixing and corruption. As per reports and news on upcoming cricket matches during the era, BCCI imposed a life ban on Azharuddin soon after he confessed to have fixed 3 ODI games. However, in 2006, the ban was lifted by the BCCI. The Indian cricketer was even honored with other Test captains in Mumbai.
#3. Glenn McGrath Blows His Top
Australians are widely known for their tendency to “sledge” (an act of verbally intimidating) their opponents. The technique works at times, but sometimes it even backfires! Glenn McGrath, the West Indies Australian bowler had a serious squabble with Ramnaresh Sarwan, the West Indian batsman. This incident was rated as one of the nastiest sledges in the cricket history. The Fourth Test in Antigua for the year 2003 against West Indies is still remembered for the tiff between the two.
#4. Shoaib Akhtar and Scandals
The very talented player has also been the most controversial cricketer of the era. No wonder he managed to be on the limelight all the time! Right from tiffs and brawls with team mates, ground officials, players from other teams and PCB officials, the best bowling talent stayed in the news for the wrong reasons. Akhtar’s involvement in drug scandals, match fixing scandals, and ball tampering made him hit the list of top controversial cricketers. In the year 2006, Akhtar was tested positive for a banned element. The following year, he was banned for a fight with Mohammed Asif (team mate) for an undetermined period. After publicly criticizing PCB in 2008, Akhtar got banned for five years.
#5. A Hungry Shahid Afridi Ate the Ball!
The all-rounder from Pakistani made headlines after being caught in the camera biting the ball! The incident occurred in January 2010 during Australia ODI match. Paul Reiffel and Ashoka de Silva, the on-field umpires and Rod Tucker (3rd umpire) and Mick Martell (4th umpire) laid a charge against him. This resulted in a ban for two of his T20 international matches. Interestingly, Afridi tried to defend by making a sidesplitting excuse that he only smelled the ball. This hilarious incident is rated amongst one of the top cricket controversy.
