It is situated on the western coast of the country in the state of Kerala.

It is the second largest city in the state. However, Cochin is the old name of the city, and now it is recognized as Kochi. The word “Kochi” comes from the Malayalam word Kochu Azhi, which means a “small lagoon”. There also exists another theory on how the city derived its name. According to it “Kochi” is derived from the word Kachi which means “harbour”.

Irrespective of the theories the city continues to be one of the most significant port cities in India and a chief contributor of revenues to the state. The city falls within the province of Ernakulam district under which Ernakulam city is its mainland part. It is for this reason that Kochi is just often called Ernakulam. Other than that, the city is also one of the most populated cities in the state and is home to people who come from different regions, religions, castes, and creeds etc.

There exists an airport, called the Cochin International Airport, at the outskirt of the city. Due to its apt location on the sea trade route between Europe and China, the city quickly emerged as an important port city. This in turn made the city one among the few cities on the Indian mainland to receive the early European colonization. It was colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The Portuguese were the first to colonize the city. They came to the city in the 15th century and subsequently made it the seat of their administration and trade. They were then defeated by the allied forces of the British and the Dutch. Later, during the era of the British, the city became the capital of a princely state.

The churches, cathedrals, old colonies, and streets, as well as other monuments left by the past rulers are today the imperative parts of the city tourism. They not only exhibit the best of medieval colonial architectural styles, but also tell the story of the city’s past. For an enthusiast of history and religion, the city is simply a must-visit. The good thing is that there are a number of hotels in Cochin that are situated near the prime tourist attractions. These hotels are the good lodging options to go for as they are known to offer a value-for-money accommodation.
