Botox is used for cosmetically treating wrinkles by temporary paralyzing the facial muscles. It is made from a neurotoxin popularly known as Botulinum which is produced by bacterium Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is generally inactive and non-toxic in nature.
It is also used in the treatment of muscular disorders, migraines, any bowel or bladder dysfunctions, or excessive sweating problems.

What is Botox
Clostridium botulinum is the primary bacteria from which Botox is derived and is found in lakes, soils. It inhabits the intestinal tracts of some mammals and gills of some crabs or shellfishes.
Generally, they are harmless but when the spores convert into cells which start uncontrolled proliferation, they produce a deadly toxin Botulinum causing nerve disruption and ultimately death. The condition is known as Botulism.
How Does Botox Work
Botox is a neurotoxin but has some curative actions too. The muscles contract when the nerves release a chemical messenger known as Acetylcholine at the junction of nerve endings and muscle cells.
They get attached to this and sends messages to contract or shorten the muscles. When Botox is injected, it hampers the release of acetylcholine and causes temporary paralyzing of the muscles making them less rigid.
Botox is mixed with saline solution and injected into the neuro muscular tissue; it starts showing its effects after 24-72 hours. Sometimes it may take a longer time period to act and is contraindicated in patients allergic to it or pregnant and lactating females.
This procedure has become very famous in India and abroad especially by the star celebrities of Indian cinema and television who opt for Botox treatment in Mumbai where there are skilled healthcare professionals and hospitals. It is not so easy to book doctor appointment for this process as the queue is increasing day by day.
Generally, there are very few side effects unless it is genetically predetermined. Some people develop antibodies against the Botox injection and makes it ineffective. The other side effects are:
- Mild pain.
- Drooping Eyelids.
- General Neck weakness.
- Double Vision.
- Eyesight trouble.
- Dry mouth.
Botox is quite expensive and its cost ranges from place to place along with the type of hospitals you are opting for the surgery. The Botox surgery can be divided into various regions whether it is the upper part or the lower lip.
The rates are variable but the upper face, crow’s feet (a wrinkle produced at the outer corner area of a person’s eye) and forehead generally cost in the range of INR 15,000 to INR 20,000.
The brand names of Botox injections are Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin and are supposed to be purified forms of botulinum without any ill effects thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
